Oh, poor thing, she at it!

There has been very little going on for a week or so - nice and quiet, great weather (lots of wind, and a little hot for a couple of days, but overall really nice).

I was watching some Bullock's Orioles playing and flying, landing, jumping around, etc.

Here's a male in the tree above:

One of the females landed on a post and seemed to be trying to pull something out of the top of the post.  I thought it might be an insect, but was too far away to see clearly.

This morning when I pulled up the photos, I could see it was fishing line with something on the end.

As I pulled up and cropped each Oriole photo, I noticed this bird seemed to have fishing line around it in the photo below - you'll have to click on it twice to see the fishing line.  Did she eat the fishing line, thinking the thing on the end was an insect?  I think so.  I hope whatever it was will soon digest and she will be able to pull the line free.  Poor thing.

Don't you just hate it when these little creatures get caught up in man's garbage?  Come on, fishermen!  Dispose of your fishing line properly!  I always did when I fished, and I know most people do, but I've seen so much line along the lake sides.  Remember all the bird nests that were made of fishing line at Pancho Villa and Caballo Lake State Parks?

Here are some photos taken here at Elephant Butte State Park in New Mexico.

Here's our site - nice, huh?

Some beautiful flowers from our walk today:

And I finally got some shots of a Jack Rabbit.  He crosses the street every day in front of The Palms, then later goes back across the street, but I never get his picture because he's so fast.  Finally I got him.  Look at those long, long, legs!  And is he skinny?  Or is this the normal size for Jack Rabbits - it looks like you can see his ribs under his skin.  Poor thing.

Makes me feel like I should plant some lettuce out here for him.

WELCOME to Shelia Wedegis!  Shelia and her husband and three dogs are soon to be full-time RVers, at least they will be as soon as they are done downsizing and purchasing their rig.  Sheila is an artist, and her blog is going to be about their RV adventures and her painting.  Love her header, a cartoon of the three dogs, who she is putting into a comic strip about their travels.  I think Living the Artist's Dream is going to be a fun read.  Check it out.  Thanks for following along with me and Katie, Shelia!

From me and Katie, have a great Friday, everyone!  :)

  1. This post's photos are absolutely beautiful - and the post is sad too. Yes, I hate to see God's children (flora or fauna) suffering due to the negligence of homo sapiens. There are just so many times we see evidence of the thoughtlessness of people. That's what starts forest fires, etc. I ope your little bird doesn't have a fishing hook attached to that line.

  2. Just took a photo of a pelican off Anna Maria Island City Pier here in Bradenton, and the poor thing has fishing line wrapped in his beak but he's still able to eat. Beautiful flower photos...

  5. I didn't know jackrabbits had such long legs. It looks like he could run on 4 legs like a dog.

  6. Feel sorry for that bird.... and the rabbit does look uncommonly skinny, don't think I have ever seen one where u can see the ribs like that!! (NO, I did not take any offense.... just wanted to be clear on how I felt about the radio show :)

  7. Great picture, as always. This says it all. I don't have a big enough following to reach people and I'd be preaching to the choir in most cases, but everyone should watch it. http://tinyurl.com/m6dstyv

  8. Poor thing....hope the line doesn't cause problems. Perhaps the rabbit is just a gangly teenager after a growth spurt and just needs to fill out yet....

  9. The bird mistook a plastic for the real worm. I am with you on our "man made garbage problem". It seems "man" does not THINK at all!
Any swallowed plastic cannot be digested. It clogs up the intestines. It's death for any animal that falls for the temptation.

  11. That is a bummer for that poor bird with the fishing line and that rabbit really does look skinny. There must not be much too eat for these poor creatures.

  12. We have jackrabbits that come to our water hole in the back area, but they are not rib-showing thin like that. It may be a mother who has been nursing babies instead of out eating, or maybe there just isn't much to eat around there. I see them eating the pods from the mesquite trees here. Are there mesquite trees at Elephant Butte? I can't remember.

  13. I love jackrabbits, too! I've never seen a fat one, so maybe skinny is sort of normal. Your flowers and the oriole are great.

  14. What a coincidence that a couple of days ago my son and my neighbor freed a bluebird who was entangled in some sort of mesh. It isn't all that difficult to dispose of trash properly and I just don't know how people just toss it anywhere they feel like it.

  15. That poor Jack Rabbit! I have never seen one so skinny. It is extremely sad when these animals get caught up in man's shameless attitude toward the environment and its creatures. It is pure and simple a case of laziness!
