First MapMyWalk walk, my dog-faced kid, and pink air

But first...  I read an interesting blog post the other day at InterstellarOrchard.   Becky was writing about her expectations before she started full-timing and what she's actually learned.   It's very well organized into "What I Expected," "What I Didn't Expect," and "What I Learned."  As one of her commenters said, "Very perceptive and a must-read for anyone looking at full-timing."

I really enjoyed it, and of course thought back to what I was expecting before I started out, what I now know that I didn't expect, and what I've learned overall after 3 1/2 years on the road.

I did a lot of research before I started, have tons of files on the computer containing tips, on-line manuals (in addition to all the manuals that came with The Palms and it's various systems), bookmarks for various forums to check when I have a question or problem, etc.  I think the more organized we are, the easier it is.  At least for me.  AND a sunny attitude, because the clouds will come from time to time, and being optimistic gets me though.

Check out her post - and also check the tab at the top called "Useful Stuff," it's really interesting, too.  Great info for dreamers or newbies, and if you're already on the road, you'll probably enjoy it as much as I did.   :)

Things have been very quiet here.  Katie and I are just chilling out and enjoying the desert.

Katie's best view of the outside world is from her car seat.  She just watches and looks and takes it easy.

I don't know if I've posted about my new 4G phone, but I'm loving it.  I can finally download all the apps and updates that my 3G wasn't able to handle.  I downloaded the Map My Walk app - it's free - and tried it out the other day.  Katie and I started out taking the trash bag to the garbage dumpsters, which are 1/4 mile from our campsite (I walk at least 1/2 mile a day!).  I put the trash bag in her stroller, and after dumping it I put Katie in for the ride home.

So the other day, using the walking app, I pushed the stroller to the dumpsters, tossed the trash, and then kept going, I wanted to see how far Katie could walk before stopping.  She walked for 1/2 mile before she couldn't go further and I put her in the stroller.  We went for a total 1.3 miles over sand and dirt and rocks, and sometimes along the main  road, which was far easier.  When we turned around and headed back to camp, it was all rocky.  It was hard pushing the stroller that long.  My wrists and thumbs get the brunt of the bumps from holding on to the stroller handle and Katie was bumping along inside the stroller.  Poor baby.  :)

The road back to camp - you can barely see The Palms at the end of the road:

And home is within sight:

It's easier to push an empty stroller, so I took her out and tried to have Katie walk for the final section, but she wouldn't - her ankle was too swollen - so I put her back in the stroller and pushed on.  Literally.

I really liked the Map My Walk app.  I could check my phone any time to see my mileage, calories burned, our location, etc.  And a voice from my pocket automatically told me when I had reached a mile and some other things, too.  It's definitely a winner and its free.

I want to start walking more than I am - since Katie had her leg injury I'm just not walking as much.  The stroller helps, but not so much in this kind of terrain.  So I've decided to walk without her.  I have lots of audio tapes on my MP3 and I'll listen to books as I walk.  I also still have a Weight Watchers "walking tape" on the MP3 from long ago, and that's a really good one to use, different beats to walk to, and a little encouragement along the way.  It always gets me walking faster, too.

We've had some gorgeous sunsets lately - I snapped some photos the other night with various settings on my camera, and also different times as the clouds moved around and the sun set.  Each was so pretty:

We've had some evenings lately when the whole desert is pink while the sun is setting.  The ground, the RVs, the mountains in the east - it's like the air is pink.  So beautiful.  I've never seen anything like it except here in Quartzsite.  Going back to my first paragraph about the InterstellarOrchard post - this is the kind of thing I never would have expected while RVing.  You just don't know what you don't know.  And I've never heard of a sunset making everything pink on the earth below it.

One more photo of Katie.  This was so funny.  A lot of dogs will nose their way under blankets to snuggle and be warm, but Katie has never done that.  She lays on top unless it's cold and I hold up the blanket for her to get under and be covered up.  Well, the other night she was in bed in the overhead bunk and I checked on her.  This is what I saw:

She not only got under the covers, she put her head on my pillow.   She looked just like a person, well - except for all the dog-face stuff going on.  :)

From me and Katie, have a great Saturday, everyone!  :)

Wordless Wednesday - funny dog photos

I know this is Wordless Wednesday, but I do have some words in this one.   Check our these photos, and look into these faces.  They speak volumes.

 Help!!!!

Something is wrong...

Uhhhh...  you got me!  (Katie gets that squinty-eye face.)

I don't know what to say about this one:

Some dogs just hate baths (is he cute, or what?):

and some dogs just love them:

And finally, one surprised kitty - look at the interesting markings on his chin, making him look surprised:

Farmer's Market at Quartzsite

I visited the new Farmer's Market here in Quartzsite a week or so ago - it's held every Wednesday morning from 8 am till noon.

I bought some great fresh fruits and veggies - a huge bag of chard, cauliflower, broccoli, yams, Fuji apples and beefsteak tomatoes:

I've eaten all the chard, one apple, one tomato and one yam.  Everything else is still in the fridge, and in very good shape.  This was all really fresh when I bought it and has lasted over a week so far.  I usually eat lots of veggies, but I guess not so much lately.  I'll eat them before they go bad, though.  Maybe time for New York Pie - the layered rice, veggie, spaghetti sauce, cheese and sour cream dinner again.  (I haven't made this in a while, but it's a great way to use broccoli and cauliflower.)

If you are interested in seeing what's available there, it's at the east end of the showgrounds property at the west end of Kuehn Blvd.  Just past the Exit 17 off ramp corner.

I also went all over town to various stores looking for new wheel covers, a new coat for Katie, candy - I have such a sweet tooth sometimes - all kinds of things.  I was gone forever and spent a fortune!

I'm always re-arranging and making little changes to The Palms - this week I hung a vase with a little twig from a desert tree - sometimes I'll put a flower in this vase.  I move it around.  Here it is over the couch, and right now it's in the kitchen.

I got some inexpensive Christmas decorations last week at one of the Dollar Stores - this is my snowman:

It's been very quiet around here, the weather has been cloudy and we've even had a couple of days of rain.  Today we have a little cloud cover and it's breezy, but mostly sunny.  I haven't been doing much - shopping for MY Christmas presents.  I had to get a new smart phone - my old 3G Droid2 won't download anything anymore, or do the updates.  I went to the library where the free Wi-Fi is really good, but it still couldn't download the programs I wanted.

So - I guess it's time, but I bought an older phone - it's actually new, but not a new version.  I called Verizon to make sure I was switching from the old 3G to the new 4G the right way, and wouldn't loose my unlimited data plan.  I'm okay there, but the first Customer Service woman seemed to know less than I do.  She had me remove my SIM card - which she said was under the battery.  I was concerned that removing the battery would disconnect us, and she said it was okay.  So, wondering if there was enough power in the phone for a period of time without the battery, I took it out, and of course the call was disconnected.  But I did take out the card and insert it into the new phone.  I did more research on-line, and finally called Verizon Customer Service again and got a different person.  She was really good.  I told her I tried to put my SIM card into the new phone and it didn't work.

Get this:  She said the older smart phones don't have SIM cards.  What the first woman was trying to get me to remove was a MicroSD card.  Luckily it seemed to be the same size and I was able to remove it from the new phone.

So...   I don't have a SIM card and the new phone didn't come with one.  Verizon is sending me one - for free with free 2-day Fed-Ex shipping.  That was nice, and it should be here Monday, and then I'll call again to be sure I do it right.  According to the second woman, when I took out the SD card from my current phone, there was a procedure to follow so the card isn't ruined.  Obviously that procedure wasn't followed since the first woman thought it was my SIM card.  I'm sure they have lots of new employees because of the holidays and all the sales of electronics this time of year.  They must be super busy and training will take some time.  And probably most calls to their call center don't involve a phone this old.  LOL

It will be nice to have a 4G phone, where hopefully my speeds won't be throttled back by Verizon as they sometimes are with the 3G.  And I'll be able to download apps again.  Ever since John told me about his MayMyWalk app (and I see it all the time on his blog), I've tried to download it, and it's just not happening with my current phone.  He walks a lot and keeps track with this app.  I've found if I have something like that, I tend to walk more.

From me and Katie, have a great Sunday, everyone!  :)

Our first coyote sighting and 2-ingredient pancakes

On Saturday Katie was looking out the front window and started barking, and wouldn't stop.  I looked out, and there was a coyote walking toward the next wash, across, and kept going behind the bushes.  Unfortunately, yesterday I washed and waxed the truck and front panels of The Palms, but didn't do the windows yet.  The front was SO filthy, dust, road bugs, etc.  Not it's all shiny and clean, but the windows are still dirty.  Still, I was able to get a couple of photos that were 1. the coyote is behind a bush, and 2.  the coyote is blurry.  I still had to post them.  I do love my coyote sightings!

Below is one of the beautiful, huge saguaros near our site.  It has a thick trunk and lots of arms, so it must be quite old.

And now a question for you: have any of you made 2-ingredient banana pancakes?  I tried the recipe I found on-line to see if it would really make pancakes.  I had a lot of bananas that were ripening too fast and needed some new ways to use them up.   All the recipes I found had basically the same two ingredients:  one banana and two eggs, and a little baking powder that makes them better.  Unfortunately I didn't have any baking powder, so I added a little pancake flour.  This is how mine turned out:

I had a problem keeping them corralled in their little round spots, and it was hard to turn them over.  The first bottom side on each batch was too brown, just short of being burned.  They didn't stay round and when I took them out to plate them, they were pretty floppy.  But, amazingly, they did taste like pancakes.  I guess I'll have to get some baking powder, because I always have eggs, and often have bananas that are too ripe to eat for me.  I like berry syrup better than maple, so I might pick up some of that, too.  Any suggestions from anyone who has tried this recipe?  :)

Our sunrise this morning, before the sun was covered in the cloudy sky - yes - I WAS up this early today.  :)

Here's my Christmas tree, for the third year.  Last year I bought a little green tree, decorated it with balls and flowers and lights.  It was pretty, but I never liked it as much as this tin, hanging tree.  So, I took all the decorations off to save just in case I can use them again put them in a baggy to stow away, and put the tree by the dumpster.  I hope someone finds it who will like it as much as I like my tin tree:

From me and Katie, have a great Tuesday, everyone!  :)
