Hooked bird :( and Katie's closet :)

Katie and I took a walk around the "berm" again this afternoon, but we went the other way.  When we walked about a half hour, I realized we were at the end, it doesn't go around.  I don't know what I was thinking, there are boats moored inside, of course they have to get out!  So, I got some photos of birds along the way:

 A flock of Seagulls

I love it when they all fly off, but I don't usually get the shot.

There were a couple of different types of ducks.

And these little black guys.

So we're walking along, and I see this black bird by himself at the water's edge.  He was going under the water, jumping back up, ruffling his feathers, kicking up a bunch of water.  I thought he was catching some kind of wonderful dinner for himself.  I started taking photos of him as we walked up to him.

Surprisingly, he didn't fly away.  When I got closer, this is what I found:

He had fishing line coming from his mouth.

Poor thing, I could hear him breathing.

I wasn't sure what to do, no one was anywhere near us, and we were on the other side of the bermed off area from any activity, about a 20 minute fast walk.  So I tied Katie up a bit away, put my camera on the ground, rolled up my jeans legs, and went into the water a couple of feet so I could get close to him.

I held onto the fishing line, and he went crazy, then calmed down.  If the crazy spurt didn't dislodge whatever was in his mouth, I knew I wouldn't be able to pull it out without hurting him.  I tried to pull the line up from the water side, and something in the wet weeds was sharp; when I pulled the weeds off, there was a three barbed hook.  I pulled on it, and it broke off.   I was left holding the line with a bird at the end of it.  I figured the best I could do would be to shorten the line and he could swim away, with whatever was at the other end still in his mouth.

I couldn't break the line closer to his beak and had no tools.  So I got two rocks and sawed the line off as close to the bird as I could.  And he turned around and swam away.  What a relief!

If we hadn't walked by when we did, he would have been tethered to the shoreline and since it was starting to get dark, I doubt anyone else would have come by to help him.  What a scary thought.  I don't know if he'll live with the thing in his mouth and a little fishing line coming out, or if he'll die, anyway, but I couldn't have left him there.  I'm hoping for a full recovery. :)

 Fly away, little guy!

Some people have mentioned Katie's wardrobe, but she only has four things and her vest for walks.  She has a princess dress, a blue sweater dress, a pink jacket and a raincoat.  She also has a Christmas sweater dress, but that's put away until December.  Here is her closet door where I hang her clothes on hooks:

 Katie's Door

...and her pink walking vest, with loops for the leash.
Can you see the blur where her wagging tail is?

And finally, here are tonight's sunset shots:

I wanted to try a black and white shot and pick up the color of
the clouds in the sunset.  Four ducks flying through.

Beautiful.

From Me and My Dog, have a great Thursday night, everyone!  :)

Utah, continued...We are in Provo

WELCOME to T - our newest follower!  His profile says, "I love the outdoors and look forward to FT adventures. Hobbies are trapshooting, metal detecting & coin collecting."  I've seen some people at RV parks running their metal detectors around empty sites.  You might even find some coins. :)  Actually coin collecting is a good thing, it won't take up much space or weight.  I hope you are a full-timer soon!

WELCOME, also, to two followers who didn't have photos, and I just found them at the beginning section of my follower list:  smdrm and Carrie Jordan.  I don't have any information about either of you, but I'm happy you are following along on our adventures.  Welcome aboard to you both, too!  :)

We ended up this afternoon at a State Park here in Provo, Utah called Utah Lake RV Park.  Utah Lake is the largest fresh water lake in Utah, and has fishing, boating, and camping.  This RV park isn't the prettiest I've been in, but it's not bad, and the setting and surrounding areas are gorgeous.  Our site:

This is the view from my window over the couch:

There is a path close to our site that leads to the Utah Lake parking area, and then the lake.  Here's the path:

And here's the lake:

Katie and I walked over to check out the lake around 5:00 pm, and we didn't get back to The Palms until 7:00.  There are lots of places to walk, there's a boat ramp, and we walked past it along the lake.  There is a berm (?) around a large area that separates a couple of areas of the lake, and we walked along that berm.  (I don't know if that's what it's called, but you get the idea.)

The sun was starting to go down when we started out, and we walked until it was almost down.  I took a ton of photos.

Me and My Dog :)

These are some of the shots I took as the sun was going down.  The clouds were changing, and it was really beautiful.

This is the same shot that I took from my window, but after we got back from our walk as it was getting dark:

And finally, as I was closing my shades, I looked out the window and there was a beautiful full moon coming up over the mountain:

To get the full effect, click on the photos and you 'll see the details more clearly.  What a beautiful spot this is.  We're staying here at least five days, and then we'll see.

I've made reservations at Zion National Park for ten days at the end of October/beginning of November.  I'd rather not make reservations, but those are the first dates I could get a site for more than one day, and I really want to stay there.  I want at least a week, and October 29th was the first available date.  There may be more sites available as first come, first served non-reservable sites, but I'm not sure about that and I didn't want to take a chance.

So, we may stay here longer than the five days I've paid for, or find another park on the way to Zion.  The price here is $20 per night, and at Zion it's  $9 per night with my Senior Card.  Good deal!

From Me and My Dog, have a great Wednesday night, everyone!  :)

We're in Utah, Walmarting tonight

WELCOME to two new followers!  Donna and her husband have a 5th wheel, but it doesn't sound like they get to use it very often.  According to your Profile, though, it sounds like you are living the good life.  Welcome, Donna, we're glad to have you along!

Welcome, also, to Hobo Joe, who has come off the road for a while to help his sister in Hawaii do some remodeling.  Not a bad place to help out the family!  Joe does some , "Hillbilly philosophizin', or somethin' like that" on his blog.  Welcome aboard, Hobo Joe, happy to have you along, too!

We hung around this morning until after noon, then drove into town to get our mail at the post office.  I went through all the mail, organized and dealt with stuff, etc. and then we headed out around 1:30, I think.

We had a nice, uneventful drive down Highway 84 and crossed the border of Idaho and Utah.  Nice roads up here in the Idaho/Utah area.  The views out the window were beautiful all the way.  Lots of great cloud formations, some large mountains with snow on the top and sides, a little rain.  Utah's landscapes are a little different than Idaho's in this northern part of the state.  They still have vast fields and lots of mountains surrounding them, but the mountains in Idaho that we saw seemed smoother and flatter.  The Utah mountains are tall and craggy, and snow capped.

We ended up a little way into Utah at Tremonton, where I stopped for gas and had dinner at a Denny's.  I seldom eat out, but I hadn't had anything good all day, and wanted to have something nutritious before we stopped at the WalMart in Perry, UT for the night.  I really like Denny's - and they have a 20 percent discount if you show your AARP card.  Nice.  I had Talapia, spinach, coleslaw, side salad and toasted bread for less than $10.  It was really good, AND I brought the bread and coleslaw back to The Palms for tomorrow.

 Leaving Tremonton

We got here at WalMart around 7:30.  There are two other RVers here for the night so far, I make three overnighters.  This is a 24-hour Supercenter,  and we are parked quite a ways from the store, so it might be quiet tonight.

The sunset sky and clouds were beautiful when we got to WalMart.

This WalMart is in a beautiful setting.

A lot of the homes and cities in this area are right up against the mountains.  It must be quite a view some of the homeowners have out their windows.

No special plans for tomorrow.  We'll drive through Salt Lake City and continue down Highway 15 toward Las Vegas.  If I see a good campground, we'll stop.  I want to visit Brice and/or Zion when we get to that area, too.  I'm told they are both beautiful parks and worth a visit, and there are lots of RV sites in both parks.  I'd  like to stay for a few weeks in Utah if the weather is good.

Katie actually ate some dinner tonight, which she usually doesn't do after a travel day, so hopefully she will not be sick tonight or tomorrow.  She's been sleeping in the bunk with me because of the cold at the last park, but tonight she's going back on the couch to sleep on her favorite pillow.  I put that light, down blanket over her when I got to bed, and she's snug as a bug until morning.  Unless she gets up. :)

From Me and My Dog, have a good Tuesday evening, everyone!  : )

We're not leaving today - it's Columbus Day

WELCOME to our new follower, WestieWaggin'!  I don't see a blog for you, but the photo of your Westie is soooo cute!  Katie and I are happy you are along for our adventures on the road.  Welcome aboard!

Well, we haven't left town yet.  I have a package waiting for me, General Delivery, at the post office here in Twin Falls.  Every so often my daughter, Kristy (actually it's usually my son-in-law, Matt) sends me my mail when I'm in a town for a while.  It probably arrived Friday, but I forgot to go to the post office when I was in town.  I also could have gone back Saturday, but I thought, Heck, I 'll stop on my way out of town on Monday.  I didn't know today is Columbus Day and the Post Office is closed.
So...  I'm trying to figure out if I want to stay here for one more day, or hang out in town for a while and sleep overnight at the WalMart.  I think for the $15 per night I'm paying here, I'll stay another night.

So, for one more day we have:

 Beautiful skies

 Beautiful flowers

 Critters on the path

 Rushing creek

 Easy walking paths

And another nap in the sunshine

But you know how you feel when you're ready to go?  You're ready to go!  I'm just glad I heard it on the radio last night, and was able to check Post Office holidays on-line this morning.  I would have been pretty disappointed standing at the locked door and seeing the "Closed for Columbus Day" sign.

So, tomorrow we go!!!

It's sunny this morning, but rain is expected later today, so I will also have one more rainy day to enjoy.

From Me and My Dog, enjoy your Columbus Day, everyone!  :)

Thank you for your comments!

Thank you all for you comments!  I had no idea there were so many Followers not having my posts updated, and I'm glad to be back.

And thanks, also, for the Magpie answer for the birds around my campsite.  They are so beautiful, they should have a fancier name, I think.  I've never been a birder, but I can see I'm getting more and more interested in knowing what the birds are that come around.  I might have to get a book of Western birds with good photos so I can do my own research.

Tomorrow we are leaving Rock Creek RV Park in Idaho.  I'd like to start heading through Utah, to Las Vegas and finally Arizona where I plan to stay for a while.  I've never been to Utah or Arizona.  I was in Las Vegas once for a weekend - to get married.  But let's not talk about that.  :(

I've read a lot about the boondocking opportunities in Arizona and want to check them out. I'm thinking I might have trouble finding a good spot in an RV Park with all the regular fulltimers reserving in advance, but boondocking shouldn't be a problem.

The camp hosts here, Angie and Keith, were telling me lots of things yesterday.  They gave me the info for a good on-site RV repairman that they trust in Yuma, and also the company in Yuma that handled their solar system.  They had very good references for both in case I need them.  They used to spend every winter there.  They live here in Twin Falls and spend half the year at home and half the year here at the RV park as hosts.  They drive home two days a week to keep up the home front.  They've got the best of both worlds.

Where we end up tomorrow will probably depend on the weather.  I'd like to find somewhere a bit warmer, although it has been a nice weekend here.  I don't take Katie for very good walks when it's cold outside, and we're both getting cabin fever a little.  We did take a good long walk this afternoon, though, and it felt good.

This morning I fixed myself cereal and raspberries.  I dropped a few of the berries and thought I got them all, but I guess I missed a big one that rolled under the lower kitchen cabinets. Later in the day, Katie was acting funny, walking back and forth from the kitchen to the dinette, looking at me, back to the kitchen, etc.  Finally she went into the kitchen, stuck her nose under the cupboards and came out with the berry in her mouth.

She came back to me, jumped up on the dinette bench and just looked at me.  I told her she could eat it, but she  just sat there.  It was so funny.  She acted like she didn't know what to do with it, but she didn't want to let it go.  She doesn't usually get people food, and has never had a berry before.

Can you believe that silly face. She sat like this for a few minutes.

Finally she jumped over to the couch and ate it.

Yum.  I think she liked it!

That's it for now.   Tomorrow is a travel day, I wonder where we will end up.

Goodnight, everyone, from Me and My Dog!  :)

I'm amazed every day...and Blogger problem solved

WELCOME to our new Followers, trailercamper!  Trailercamper and his wife, Mia, are planning a retirement trip to begin in the next four years.  They are planning to take six or seven months and travel around the country.  Sounds like a good plan to me!  I'll enjoy following you as you make plans for your grand trip.  Thanks for following along with me and Katie on ours!  We're happy to have you along.  :)

I am still amazed every day that I'm living in a house on wheels with all the comforts I have here.

I look out my front (cab) window and see tons of these birds, picking at the grass and street.

There are cats that roam through some of the campgrounds we've been at.  Here's our current resident cat:

He spent a lot of time around that garbage can, watching the birds, and finally hopped up on the rim and reached into the can to get something.  The birds came close to him, but he didn't go after them.

This is one of the bridges crossing the creek up at the end near us.  This creek is wide and fast, and looks deep.  I'd sure hate to fall into it.

This next photo is what I see looking out my kitchen window in the back of The Palms  It's so pretty, and when the wind blows, all these grasses blow around.

The view out this window constantly changes.  I've had views of forests, beaches, lush lawns, and sometimes asphalt or a busy rest stop parking area.  From the sublime to the... not so sublime.

When I make coffee in the morning, sometimes I think, "How can I be here, in a little house on six wheels in the middle of a park, making my coffee?  With this beautiful view?"  How can this be?  Pretty amazing.  I hope I never lose the wonder I feel living in The Palms.

I left a question regarding my post updating problem on the Google Help Forum and I've had an answer from Peter.  It sounds like he knows what he's talking about, and Rick agreed with his opinion.  It was that some photos I had posted on August 31 weren't the right kind of photos, and he listed two that needed to be deleted.  So I went back in and deleted them, and updated them with JPG files instead.   I remember that day searching through my photos for appropriate pics, and there were a couple I did a "cut and paste" with, instead of inserting them the usual way.  I was surprised at the time that I could cut and paste.  I guess it worked, but not very well, because apparently those two photos have been causing all the post updating issues from that date forward.

I hope that took care of everything and we're back to normal now.  I guess one of the takeaways from all this is that if we have issues with Blogger, we can click on the "Help" at the top right of our screens and leave a question in the forum and we just might get back a good solution.

The sun is shining here today, and it's a nice, warm 73 degrees in The Palms right now.  I hope all is well in your world, too.

From Me and My Dog, have a great Saturday, everyone!  :)

Testing - is this post updating on your blogrolls?

Rick left a comment on My Dream Has Six Wheels:

It may not be a problem with Blogger at all. Me and My Dog needs to recheck her time and date settings on her computer to ensure they are correct.

I'm currently in Mountain Time, but my blog posts are set for Pacific Time, where I was on the west coast when I started.   I noticed the time was different on my posts, but didn't think anything of it.

Okay, I'm changing the time to my correct, current time.  Let me know if I start showing up again for Followers who have not been getting my posts.  I'm hoping this quick fix is all it will take.

Thanks, Rick.  Hopefully you've saved the day again!  :)

Gypsy sent me an e-mail saying she thought most of the people not getting the updates had Mac computers.  I wonder if that's true?

Do you guys all change your times zones in Blogger settings when you cross into a new time zone?  I'll have to keep track of that.

As always, have a great evening!  :)

PS - It's a miracle! - I changed my time zone in Blogger settings, and now I can access my dashboard from IE and Chrome, which I haven't been able to do for a long time.  It must have been the time zone change that has been causing me problems with that, too.  Who knew?  Maybe that's why some of the blogs I follow weren't showing up - like Gypsy's when she was traveling back east, and others who have traveled to Arizona, etc.

Battery problem and Blogger problem both solved today.  Wow!

A BIG thank you - I think we're back in business

Thank you all so much for your suggestions and comments and e-mails about our heating/electrical/battery issues.   I've taken them to heart and I think the problem is solved.  I've been reading my manuals and searching the forums for the past two days and nights, intermittently starting my engine to get some heat.  I knew that was not a good thing to do, but we were COLD, and that's about all I could do to keep us warm.

I called my son to ask him some battery questions, I didn't want to mess with them, but he said it was safe to just pull off the cover on the cells and check them.  Be careful, don't let any acid splash on me.  I was glad he told me about the cover, I wouldn't have known where the cells were from just looking.  Note to self:  they are under the cover .  Yesterday morning I didn't know what a battery cell was, and now I know how to find them and fill them. Every day a new adventure. :)

Unfortunately that didn't solve my problem, so I wrote the blog post asking for your help.

After reading your comments, I made notes and planned to do something today.  I was happy to see you all thought my batteries were probably okay, that it was possibly the connection to the batteries that was faulty.

I went through all my manuals again, and the one thing that kept catching my eye was my Battery Disconnect.

I do have one, but have never had a problem with it.  It is either ON or OFF.  Then I thought, Battery ON or OFF or Disconnect ON or OFF?  I think I was misunderstanding what the ON and OFF meant.  It appears to be a double negative type thing.  I thought when it was ON, that meant the Battery Disconnect was ON.

The camp host woman came over this morning to see if I was okay - she probably saw me out in the rain yesterday trying to fill my battery cells. I showed her the Battery Disconnect and asked her if it should be on or off, and she wasn't sure, but she gave me the name and address of an RV sales and service shop down the road.  I was already packed up and ready to go to Walmart to get our heaters, so we went to the RV place first.  The service guy there scratched his head, turned it on then off, muttered something to himself like, "let's see, circuit open... mmmmm mmmm, Okay, it should be ON."  He also said if the Battery Disconnect was off, the battery might work for a short time, which is what it was doing.

So... the ON or OFF pertains to the battery, but I was taking it literally.  If the battery disconnect is on, wouldn't that mean the battery is disconnected?  I think that should be clearer on the switch plate, don't you?  Anyway, apparently I have had the battery disconnected all this time.  I think.  No wonder it didn't work!  Thank goodness it was such an easy fix, although it did take me two cold days to figure it out, with help from my followers.  I'm glad I posted about it, because your comments made me think in a different direction, which finally got me the answer.  I was blaming the batteries.

So again, thank you!!!  You don't know how nice this afternoon is, sitting here in the warmth of The Palms.

Yesterday Katie had on her sweater, her quilted coat and two blankets, and I had on a turtleneck sweater, fleece top, down vest and wool coat, jeans, and two blankets.  And my legs were still not warm.  I'd open a cupboard and cold air would come out at me.  Wow.  Today is so much nicer.

After the RV place, we went to Walmart.  They didn't have any Holmes heaters, in fact the shelves in that section had lots of bare spots so they are really selling heaters right now, but I got two of these heaters:

 Pelonis Space Heater, Walmart, $14.74

They are small and light weight, and have safety features that turn them off if tipped or too hot.  They have a fan option as well as three settings on the right side, 1 - 2-  3, and a Minimum to Maxiumum setting on the left side.  I got two and put one in the kitchen on the first setting on the right, medium setting on the left, and put the other one right before you enter the cab.  Same settings.  So we have heat in the front and the rear of The Palms, and we are really comfortable now.  (Thanks, Andy, for your heater comments, as well as all the troubleshooting tips.)

This fulltiming life is challenging at times, but I have to admit I feel really good when a problem is solved.  Every time something goes wrong, I don't have any choice - I have to find a solution.  And there is always a solution.  Usually I just read my manuals and find the answer there.  If that doesn't work, I check out the forums on-line and the answer is usually there.  If that fails, I blog about it, and you guys usually bail me out.  I guess the last option would be to pay an RV service center to trouble shoot and fix it, but I haven't had to do that yet.

And now I know that my generator has a full oil tank, because I topped it off when I filled my batteries, my batteries have full cells, all my breakers and fuses are working, and today I also had my propane filled. I have two space heaters - what more could a girl wish for?  LOL.

On another subject, yesterday this bird was walking and flying around my site, and I grabbed the camera and got a photo through the window before he flew away.  Isn't he pretty?  He looks really pretty flying, too.  I don't know what kind of bird he is.  Judy?  I'm sure you recognize him with his distinctive markings. :)

No other photos, it's just too cold and windy outside to spend any time out there.  The weekend is supposed to be warm up a bit, so I'm giong to go on a "photo shoot" this weekend.

From Me and My Dog, have a great Friday evening, everyone!  :)

Our batteries aren't working, any suggestions?

I am having some real issues with heating and electricity.  I think this is first time I have had to use my lights for such a long time in the evening, and I've had the heater on more than usual.  It's cold in The Palms, and I've had to use the heat from the truck/cab heater to keep us warm today.

My batteries keep going down to zero on my panel, the lights flicker, the fridge is twittering, and I'm not sure what's going on.  I'm connected to the electric here, and my TV, microwave and elect. outlets are working, so the park electricity seems to be okay.

I just ran the generator for a few minutes, and the battery lights went to 3/4 full.  I turned off the generator, turned on the heater and within a few minutes the fridge was alerting me with twittering, and my CCI Controls - LPG Gas Leak Detector was going from Operating to Fault-low voltage.  The manual says the orange Fault light goes on if the battery voltage goes below 8.5.

When I'm in a park with electricity, shouldn't that be what the rig uses for heat, lights, fridge, etc.?  Or are my coach batteries ALWAYS used for those things, the same as when I'm dry camping?

When I start my engine, in a few minutes the panel shows the batteries are full, but they quickly go back to zero if I turn on a light or the heat.  Something is really draining them quickly.

This morning I checked the breakers and all the fuses in my Power Converter, and everything looked good.

My batteries are Interstate, I had them put in in August, so they are virtually brand new, and I've been in a park with electricity almost every night.  I went out in the rain today for about an hour to check my generator and  battery cells.  (When the batteries are so low, my generator won't start, and if I have any truck engine issues, I won't be able to start the truck with the generator under the current conditions.)  I added a little oil to the generator, and added a little distilled water to all the cells.  I'm not sure how full they should be, but I could see water in the front cells, and added a little to each one just in case.

I can't find anything specific on the forums about this, and the books that came with the rig don't say anything specific that I understand.  Can you guys help with comments?  Or direct me to a website that has this information?

When I'm in a park with electricity, what should the coach batteries be doing?  Do you think the batteries are just bad?  Connected wrong?

As you can see from the weather gadget on the left panel, the temperature right now is 40 degrees, feels like 24 degrees.  And it's 6:20.  It's going to be a COLD night.  (Last night I had Katie up in the bunk with me, and with my down comforter and a quilt, were were toasty, so we'll be warm once we go to bed.  Which might be soon...)

If you are able to help, thank you!!

Another thing, I was thinking of going into town tomorrow to get an electric heater.  One of the forums said Vornado at Target is a good one.  If I get one, then I can plug it in and use it with my electricity, right?  Then I won't have to use the coach heater?

PS - In reading my manuals and more forum reading, I found my refrigerator Climate Control Switch was ON, and I turned it OFF.   If it is ON, it is a constant drain on the battery, and is mostly for warm humid weather.  So, that was one thing...

From Me and Katie, have a great Thursday evening, everyone!  :)

It's raining, it's pouring...

Finally, we have rain, rain, rain.   Katie is pretty mellow about it now.  I think the wind bothers her more, because it rocks The Palms a little.  When there's a big gust she looks up, waits, then snuggles back into her bed again.

Around 12:30 am last night I woke up and heard a little soft whining, and looked down at the couch where Katie sleeps now, and she was sitting up looking at me, whining.  I realized she went out for a late afternoon walk, but not her night time walk, so I climbed down, dressed in warm clothes, and took her outside where it was windy and rainy.  She went potty right away, and we came right back in.   She already had a sweater on, which I'm using for a sleep shirt to keep her warm, and I covered her up with her blanket so she had a nice cave, and she went back to sleep.  She is so cute.

Of course, at that point, I wanted to stay up for a while and enjoy the storm, so I turned on my computer, answered some e-mails and read some blogs. After about an hour I climbed back up to the bunk and went back to sleep.

We went out this morning in the rain, and I took some photos:

The creek, picking out the green
Close up of same area with yellow/orange
More yellow/orange colors
Tree, highlighting its autumn colors

Katie in her raincoat this morning

And all snuggled up in her pink jacket

It's rained pretty much all day, but they still had some sort of after school sporting event on the large lawn area across the creek.  Lots of cars came, everyone got out with their umbrellas, kids were running around, lots of cheering, and everyone got back in their cars and drove away.

It's been in the 60s in The Palms all day,  and the heater has been going on and off.  I think this is the first day I've worn my jeans, sweatshirt and running shoes.  And I've had a blanket over my legs.  Usually it's shorts, tank top or tee-shirt and sandals.  This weekend its supposed to go back up to sunny and in the 70s.

It's getting dark now, but we're warm and dry and very comfortable.

By the way, last week when I was at Walmart, they were giving flu shots, so I got one.  They are $20 if you pay for it yourself.  There are lots of places up here offering the shots, I don't know if they are doing that everywhere, but it was nice to have it so convenient.  And it didn't hurt a bit.  I get one every year, and so far I've haven't gotten the flu.  I've gotten sick - colds and allergies - things like that, but I don't think I've gotten the flu for years.   It was nice to get it done and out of the way for another year.

From Me and My Dog, have a great Wednesday night, everyone!  :)
